Why Your Display Case Fogs Up (And How to Stop It)
A refrigerated display case has one job beyond keeping product cold: letting people see what they are buying. When the glass fogs over or runs with condensation, you lose the sale before the customer gets close. Worse, fogging is almost never cosmetic. It is the case telling you something has failed.
Why glass fogs in the first place
Condensation forms when warm, humid air touches a surface that is below its dew point. Your store air is warm and full of moisture. The glass on a refrigerated case is cold. Every case is engineered to sit right on the edge of that problem and stay clear anyway, using door heaters, tight seals, and controlled airflow. When one of those slips, the balance tips and the glass goes cloudy.
That is why fogging shows up in humid weather first. Around Tyler, the muggy stretch from late spring through September pushes indoor dew points high enough that a case with a marginal fault will fog even though it held up fine in February.
The four usual causes
Failed anti-sweat heaters. Most glass-door cases run low-wattage heaters in the door frame and glass edges specifically to keep the surface above dew point. When one burns out or its controller fails, that door fogs and the others stay clear. If one door is cloudy and its neighbor is not, this is the first suspect.
Worn door gaskets. A gasket that has gone hard, torn, or pulled loose lets a steady bleed of humid room air into the case. That moisture has to go somewhere, and it condenses on the coldest surface it can find. Gaskets are cheap and one of the highest-value things on the whole unit.
Doors left open or misaligned. A hinge that has sagged, a door that no longer self-closes, or a busy shift where the door sits open all dump humidity inside. If fogging started after a heavy weekend, check whether the door actually latches on its own.
A case working too hard. A condenser coil packed with dust and grease makes the system run longer and colder than intended, dropping the glass temperature further below dew point. This one fools people because the case still feels cold. It is cold. That is the problem.
What you can check yourself
Before calling anyone, spend two minutes on this:
- Run a hand along the door gasket and feel for cold air escaping or a gap where it does not seat.
- Watch whether the door swings fully closed on its own from halfway open.
- Look at whether one door is fogging or all of them. One door points at heaters or a gasket, all doors points at humidity or the refrigeration side.
- Pull the kick plate and look at the condenser coil. If you cannot see through the fins, that is your answer.
When fogging is the least of it
Fogging that comes with product warming, ice on the coil, or a case that runs nonstop is not a glass problem. It means the refrigeration side is struggling and the condensation is just the visible symptom. At that point you are risking product, not presentation, and it needs a tech rather than a wipe-down.
Stop it from coming back
Fogging is a maintenance problem more often than a repair problem. Gaskets get inspected, coils get cleaned, and door heaters get tested on a schedule, or they fail on their own timeline instead of yours. Most operators who fog every summer are running cases that have not been serviced since the last time something broke.
